Govardhan Puja and Bhai Dooj 2026: Dates, Muhurat, Puja Vidhi and Brass Gift Ideas

Govardhan Puja and Bhai Dooj 2026: Dates, Muhurat, Puja Vidhi and Brass Gift Ideas

, by Vedansh Craft, 7 min reading time

Govardhan Puja is Nov 10 and Bhai Dooj is Nov 11, 2026. Get the muhurat, puja vidhi, why dates differ, and brass gift ideas for Bhai Dooj.

The last two days of the Diwali festival are Govardhan Puja and Bhai Dooj, and this year their dates cause real confusion because panchang sources differ by a day. The better supported dates are Tuesday, November 10, 2026 for Govardhan Puja and Wednesday, November 11, 2026 for Bhai Dooj. This guide explains why, gives the muhurat, walks through both pujas at home, and suggests brass gifts for your brother, your sister, or the family altar.

Govardhan Puja and Bhai Dooj 2026 Dates

Festival Date Also Known As
Govardhan Puja Tuesday, November 10, 2026 Annakut, Bali Pratipada, Gujarati New Year
Bhai Dooj Wednesday, November 11, 2026 Yama Dwitiya, Bhau Beej, Bhai Phonta, Bhai Tika

Why Are the Dates Confusing This Year?

Govardhan Puja: The puja is observed on Kartik Shukla Pratipada, the day after Diwali night. This year Amavasya is still running at sunrise on November 9, so the Pratipada puja moves to Tuesday, November 10. Some holiday lists still show November 9, so follow your local panchang or family priest.

Bhai Dooj: Dwitiya tithi begins at around 2:00 PM on November 10 and ends at around 3:53 PM on November 11. Because the tilak ceremony is performed in the afternoon (Aparahna) when Dwitiya is present, it falls on Wednesday, November 11, with a tilak window of roughly 1:30 PM to 3:45 PM. A few sources show November 10, so confirm with a local panchang.

What is Govardhan Puja?

Govardhan Puja, also called Annakut, remembers the story of Lord Krishna lifting Govardhan hill on his little finger to shelter the people of Vrindavan from heavy rain sent by Indra. Families celebrate by offering Krishna a large spread of food, called annakut, which means a mountain of food, and in many homes by worshipping cows, which are central to Krishna's story. The same day is Bali Pratipada in parts of India and the start of the new year for Gujarati communities.

Govardhan Puja Vidhi at Home

  1. Prepare in the morning. The puja is traditionally done in the morning after sunrise, so clean the puja area and decorate it with rangoli.
  2. Create a Govardhan symbol. Many homes shape a small hill from cow dung and decorate it with flowers. If that is not possible, a small mound of food or a Krishna idol on a decorated platform works as the focus.
  3. Worship Krishna. Bathe the idol, dress it, and offer flowers, tulsi leaves, kumkum, and akshat.
  4. Offer the annakut. Arrange a variety of cooked food, sweets, and fruit before the deity, in some traditions 56 dishes known as Chappan Bhog.
  5. Light a diya and perform aarti. Circumambulate the symbol if you made one, perform aarti, and share the food as prasad.

What is Bhai Dooj?

Bhai Dooj, or Yama Dwitiya, celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters and closes the five day Diwali festival. It is linked to the story of Yamuna welcoming her brother Yama, who blessed brothers honoured by their sisters with protection and long life. It is known as Bhau Beej in Maharashtra, Bhai Phonta in Bengal, and Bhai Tika in Nepal.

Bhai Dooj Tilak Vidhi

  1. Prepare the thali. The sister prepares a thali with kumkum or roli, akshat, a diya, sweets, and a coconut.
  2. Seat the brother. The brother sits comfortably facing his sister during the afternoon tilak window.
  3. Apply the tilak. The sister applies tilak on his forehead, places akshat on it, and offers him sweets.
  4. Perform aarti. She performs aarti and prays for his long life and wellbeing.
  5. Exchange gifts. The brother gives his sister a gift in return, and many families share a meal together.

Brass Gift Ideas for Govardhan Puja and Bhai Dooj

A brass piece makes a lasting gift because it is used daily on the home altar rather than set aside. Here are options by budget.

Brass Idols for a Krishna Altar

If you are setting up or refreshing a Krishna altar for Govardhan Puja, choose an idol that matches your altar size, look for clear detailing in the flute, crown, and ornaments, and prefer solid brass, which feels heavy for its size and ages well. Our guides on choosing the perfect Radha Krishna idol and the role of brass Krishna statues have more detail.
